Past events
Desucon is the flagship of Finnish events hosting Japanese guests, having first pioneered the annual practice. The guests of honour for Desucon 2009 were the distinguished voice actor Tōru Furuya; lecturer of film studies at Hanazono University, Ryūsuke Imai; and director Kiyokazu Fujimoto of Pyrotechnist Co., Ltd., management company for CLAMP.
Desucon 2010 featured singer-songwriter Halko Momoi as well as the first ever appearance outside Japan of Nobuyuki Fukumoto, the mangaka behind Kaiji and Akagi. Desucon 2010 almost doubled its attendance from 1,643 visitors of Desucon 2009 to 3,184 tickets sold.
At Desucon 2011 the number of tickets to be sold was lowered to 2,800 in order to make sure every visitor gets to enjoy the convention to the fullest. As a result, Desucon 2011 was the first anime convention in Finland to have sold out in advance. The guests of honour for Desucon 2011 were composer Kohei Tanaka, voice actress Yuuko Gotoo and animator couple Kazuko Tadano and Hiromi Matsushita.
Other events
The year 2011 has seen the expansion of our Desucon brand as we have been able to offer new and exciting events.
DesuTalks (22 January 2011) was a rock solid one-day seminar with nothing but 15-minute lectures about anything and everything in the literary theory, philosophy, psychology and technology of Japanese anime and manga. Photographs available through here.
Reversing the course, we also care for the social aspect of anime and manga fandom. There was absolutely nothing rock solid about the hazy undulations on DesuCruise (19-20 March 2011), which provided the opportunity for hobbyists around the country to meet in a relaxed atmosphere. There will be even more fun and games as DesuCruise sets sail again later this spring (8-10 March 2012)!
In the January of 2012, the Desucon brand expanded to introduce its first winter event called Desucon Frostbite, a two-day convention held at the Sibelius Hall in Lahti. The event was primarily aimed for those new to the world of anime, manga and Japanese popular culture and focused on interactive programming. The guest of honour for Desucon Frostbite was the experienced voice actor Toshio Furukawa.
